Through participation in Mock Trial, students enhance their critical thinking, communication, writing, public speaking, and logical reasoning skills. We prepare students not just for law school and the legal field, but for success in any career or profession.
The Mock Trial Competition Team at Auburn University is comprised of students from various majors across campus. Our two trial teams compete against other colleges and universities from across the country. Membership in the team furthers the study of law and builds transferrable skills through various competitions throughout the year.
In August, the American Mock Trial Association, or AMTA, releases a case packet to participating teams from university and college teams located across the United States. In 2025-2026, there were 868 teams registered with AMTA. This packet presents either a criminal or civil case that centers around a particular incident and includes any witness affidavits, exhibits, statutory law, prevailing case law, and rules of evidence. Each team will prepare both a Plaintiff/Prosecution and a Defense case, writing opening statements, direct examinations, cross examinations and closing arguments. Students play both attorney and witness roles.
At competitions, each trial team will try both sides of the case against teams from another college, with each "trial" being presented before both a presiding judge and a scoring judge. Competitions typically consist of four rounds, where teams compete twice as the Plaintiff/Prosecution and twice as the Defense. Each round must be completed within three hours and usually lasts the entire time. Tournaments generally last two to three days and are held over the weekend. Each team member is scored by a panel of judges based upon their performance, pursuant to AMTA scoring criteria. For more information about the American Mock Trial Association, visit AMTA's website.
